Pause for photos at this stately home before continuing along the coast, where traces of Pictish and Viking history remain.
Mid-Morning – East Coast and John O’Groats

Today is your chance to explore this archipelago's fertile green pastures, fringed by shores of golden sands and washed by the waters of the North Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. As you journey through Orkney, you'll also visit the sites of the Heart of Neolithic Orkney, a UNESCO World Heritage site that encompasses some of the most significant and well-preserved prehistoric monuments in Europe.
Mid-Morning - Exploring the Ancient Sites in Orkney
Step back in time to an ancient world of mystery and wonder at Maeshowe (admission included), a massive, chambered cairn and passage tomb dating back over 5,000 years. This awe-inspiring structure is aligned with the sun, and something magical happens here during the winter solstice. This is also where you'll find Viking graffiti—runes carved by Norsemen who visited the site in the 12th century. Next, visit the Ring of Brodgar, an ancient stone circle steeped in local legends and set against views of the hills. As you stand among these towering stones, which date back over 4,000 years, you'll feel a powerful connection to the past, imagining the rituals and ceremonies that once took place here.
Afternoon - Skara Brae, Stromness for Lunch, and Exploring Orkney
Continue uncovering the secrets of the ancient past at Skara Brae (admission included). As you explore this 5,000-year-old village, complete with stone-built homes, furniture, and even a hidden chamber, you'll be transported back in time to imagine what life was like for its early inhabitants. Day 5. Kirkwall - Ullapool
After your trip from Kirkwall to Ullapool, it's time to part ways with your guide and group, as the first leg of your tour concludes.
This evening, you'll have free time to relax or explore the village's whitewashed cottages before beginning the next part of your journey.

Morning - Journey to the Ferry Terminal at St Margaret's Hope
Say farewell to Kirkwall as you travel once again through the rugged, windswept landscape. The route passes the calm, deep waters of Scapa Flow on the way to St Margaret's Hope and the ferry terminal.
Mid-Morning - Ferry to Mainland Scotland
Enjoy an hour-long journey across the Viking waters of the Pentland Firth. Keep your eyes peeled for any signs of whales or dolphins during the crossing.
Afternoon - Exploring Parts of the North Coast 500
Back on the mainland, the northern stretch of the North Coast 500 takes you through some of Scotland's most remote and rugged landscapes, with dramatic cliffs, windswept beaches, and rolling hills. Your driver-guide will lead you to the most scenic spots along the way before you reach Smoo Cave, a vast sea cave shaped by sea and freshwater over millennia, with a labyrinth of chambers to explore. From here, you'll head into the far northwest Highlands, where the wilderness of the Assynt mountains awaits. After soaking in the stunning scenery, stop to admire the 15th-century ruins of Ardvreck Castle, perched on the shores of a loch and steeped in legends.
Early Evening - Free Evening in Ullapool
The day concludes with a scenic drive past the iconic silhouettes of towering mountains, returning to Ullapool. The route passes through untouched moorlands and peat bogs en route to the shores of Loch Broom. Enjoy a well-deserved rest among the charming, whitewashed cottages of this delightful fishing village.

Alternatively, you could head up Claypool Hill for an easy two-hour
walk, offering wonderful views over Loch Broom, reaching a height of
900 feet. Feeling more adventurous? Add to this walk by completing a three-hour circuit returning to the town via Rhiddoroch estate. Ask your new guide for details regarding nearby walks and hikes!

Day 7. Ullapool - Stornoway
After a fun first day with your new guide and travel companions, enjoy some free time this evening at your own pace. You might want to try some delicious local food, or take a relaxing stroll along the scenic harbor.
Morning - Joining the Second Part of the Tour and Leaving Ullapool
Wake up, enjoy breakfast, and look out over Loch Broom as it glistens under the morning sky. Today, you'll join a new driver-guide and other intrepid fellow travelers on the second leg of your journey. Once you're on the bus with your new group, the adventure continues, and you'll board a ferry later today to cross the sea to the Outer Hebrides.
Mid-Morning - Ferry to Stornoway
Board the ferry and start the exciting journey past the Summer Isles to Stornoway, in the Outer Hebrides. This two-and-a-half-hour boat trip takes you through a sea called the Minch, which is said to be inhabited by the Hebridean Sea Serpent. Look out to sea; you may catch a glimpse of this mythical creature. If you're not lucky, there's still a chance of seeing dolphins and whales.
Afternoon - Arriving on the Isle of Lewis, Lunch in Stornoway
You arrive at Stornoway on the Western Isles and have lunch in one of the cafes or restaurants. Recharged with local specialties, you start your explorations of these unique and remote islands. You will spend your next two days discovering the rugged landscapes, rich cultural heritage, and the slower way of life the Outer Hebrides are known for. You'll head to the northwest coast, traveling through traditional crofting towns and seaside ports. Your driver-guide takes you to the Butt of Lewis, the oldest continuously used lighthouse in the archipelago that was designed by the famous engineer Robert Stevenson.
Early Evening - Free Evening in Stornoway
After seeing the dramatic cliffs and facing the powerful Atlantic Ocean, you'll travel through the Isle of Lewis to your overnight accommodation in Stornoway. The evening is yours, so you can decide how to spend your time. Will you try the famous local black pudding? Will you stroll along the picturesque harbor? The choice is yours.

Located two blocks from Stornoway Harbour, the Crown Hotel is surrounded by a variety of bars, restaurants, and shops. Today, immerse yourself in the history and landscapes of this wild island. First, head north to see Arnol Blackhouse (admission included). Here, you can experience what traditional farming life was like in these remote reaches as you explore a restored 19th-century croft house.
Mid-Morning - Arnol Blackhouse to Dun Carloway Broch
Just a little way down the road, you'll visit the stone fort of Dun Carloway. This structure, believed to be a fortification or an ancient residence, was built before 100 AD. It's a wonderful location to ponder the vast swathes of history that have come before you.
Afternoon - Exploring Different Regions of Lewis
Spend the rest of the afternoon on the beautiful, serene beaches along the rugged coast and mountains on the western side of Lewis. You'll travel back to Stornoway through a different part of the island, through a landscape dotted with lochs and moors that is home to rich wildlife.

Afternoon - Luskentyre Beach, Tarbert, and Ferry Crossing to Skye
Depending on the weather, you may head to Leverburgh, a charming village with a picturesque harbor, or have a picnic lunch in a scenic location. Then, travel to the gem of the island, Luskentyre Beach, often ranked among the most beautiful beaches in the world. Here, powdery white sands meet crystal-clear turquoise waters, with all that unspoiled beauty framed by rugged Scottish scenery. Afterward, it's time to say farewell to the remote and tranquil Outer Hebrides and hop back on a ferry in Tarbert to continue your journey to Skye.
Early Evening - Journey through the Isle of Skye to Portree
Arrive off the ferry in Uig on the Misty Isle and travel through the Trotternish Peninsula to Portree. This part of the island captures your imagination with its surreal rock formations, steep rugged cliffs, vast empty spaces, and an overall sense of wilderness.
