The panorama of rounded fells and fields of Irish green is only broken by the waters of Ballinskelligs Bay funnelling out to the fickle ocean. Wonderfully remote but far from isolated, it owes its existence to the heady technological era of the late 1800s. As just about the most westerly point of Europe, the town’s cable station heralded a crucial transatlantic bond, and golf naturally found a home on these rugged shores. From humble beginnings in 1889, today Waterville stands serenely in the top 20 of the world’s links. A rare breed indeed.
